Concert Week in Korea: Your Hotel Cancelled or Asked for More Money

The short answer

A confirmed, paid booking in Korea is a contract at the posted price. If a hotel asks for more money after confirmation, you do not have to pay. If it cancels and resells the room, document it and dispute it through the platform and your card issuer.

What happened in Busan in 2026

In June 2026, two BTS concerts at Busan Asiad Main Stadium drew more than 100,000 ticket holders. Weeks before the shows, travelers began reporting the same few patterns.

Stay Haeundae, Busan · reported case, Korea Consumer Agency 2026

"Two months after I booked, the property said the price had been listed by mistake and asked me to pay extra before check-in, or the booking would be cancelled."

  • Extra demand: ₩500,000 for two nights
  • Booking already confirmed and paid
  • Threat of cancellation if refused

What it turns on: confirmation. Once the booking was confirmed and paid, the consumer agency's position was that the guest had no duty to pay the extra amount.

Stay Busan · reported case, Korea Consumer Agency 2026

"They cancelled citing overbooking and a pricing error. Then I saw the same room listed again for about five times what I had paid."

  • Cancelled roughly two months after booking
  • Same room resold at about 5×

What it turns on: the screenshot. A relisted room at a higher price is the evidence that turns "overbooking" into a dispute you can win.

Why posting a high price was not illegal, but cancelling was a problem

Korean lodging rules require a business to post its rates and charge what it posts. A hotel could legally post a very high rate for concert night. What it could not do was change the price of a booking it had already confirmed. Busan police said cancellations made on false grounds could be treated as fraud, and opened investigations in June 2026.

How do I protect a concert-week booking?

  1. Book the day the date is announcedPrices move within hours of an announcement. Earlier bookings are cheaper, but also the ones some properties try to undo, so keep records.
  2. Pay through a platform, by cardThat gives you a written contract, a mediator and a card dispute route. A bank transfer to an individual gives you none of these.
  3. Screenshot the listing at the moment you bookPrice, room type, cancellation policy and the property's registration details. You will want the "before" picture.
  4. Answer pressure in writing onlyIf the property messages you, reply in the platform chat: "My booking is confirmed and paid. I will not pay an additional charge." Do not cancel it yourself.
  5. Keep checking the listingIf your booking is cancelled, check whether the same room reappears and at what price.

What weakens your case

  • Agreeing to cancel "voluntarily"
  • Paying the extra amount by bank transfer
  • Arguing only by phone
  • No record of the original price

What strengthens it

  • Original confirmation and payment record
  • A written refusal in the platform chat
  • Screenshot of the relisted room
  • A complaint filed before the stay date

The response was not only enforcement

For the June shows, Busan and nearby cities arranged about 1,300 alternative beds in university dormitories, public training centres, youth facilities and even temples, offered to fans free or at low cost. Most Busan hosts charged normal rates and honoured their bookings. The problem was a minority, and it drew a national response.

Check the next big show early

The government has said it will add penalties for lodgings that cancel bookings without a valid reason, and introduce a system where lodgings register their seasonal price ceilings in advance. Until those rules are in force, your screenshots are your protection.

The bottom line

The bottom line

Korea is a very safe and generally honest place to travel, and most hosts keep their word even during the biggest concerts. A small number learned that excited fans rarely file complaints. A confirmed booking, a card payment and a few screenshots change that.

If it happened to you, report it to 1330 or 1372, and also write it up publicly. The next fan booking for the next concert will search for exactly your story.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Korean hotel ask me to pay more after my booking is confirmed?

No. Korea's Public Health Control Act rules require lodging businesses to charge the rates they post, and the Korea Consumer Agency has stated that once a booking is confirmed and paid, the guest has no obligation to pay an extra charge demanded later for peak season or a claimed pricing error.

My Korean hotel cancelled my concert-week booking and relisted the room at a higher price. What can I do?

Screenshot the relisted room and price, keep your confirmation and payment record, and file through the booking platform and your card issuer. You can also report it to the 1372 Consumer Counseling Center or the 1330 Korea Travel Hotline. In June 2026 Busan police opened fraud investigations into lodging businesses that cancelled bookings and resold rooms at higher prices.

How much do hotel prices rise in Korea during big K-pop concerts?

A Fair Trade Commission and Korea Consumer Agency survey of 135 Busan lodgings for the June 2026 BTS concerts found average rates on the concert night at about 2.4 times the surrounding weekends, with motels at about 3.3 times. Individual listings rose far more.

When should I book accommodation for a concert in Korea?

Book as soon as the date is announced, through a platform, by card, and choose a listing with free cancellation if possible. Bookings made before an announcement are the ones most often pressured to cancel, so screenshot the posted price and policy at the time of booking.
