Korean Apps Want a Korean Phone Number: What Tourists Can Do
Restaurant bookings, delivery and taxi apps in Korea often ask for a Korean mobile number. Why it happens, which workarounds actually work, and what is changing.

The short answer
Use apps built for visitors, and keep the Korean ones for when someone local can help. Many Korean services verify you by text message to a Korean number registered in your name, which a tourist SIM usually cannot pass. Visitor-focused apps for taxis, restaurant waitlists and payments accept email sign-up and foreign cards.
📱 What usually works
| Task | Often blocked | Usually works for visitors |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi | Local taxi apps needing a 010 number | Visitor taxi apps with email sign-up; street taxis on the meter |
| Restaurant booking or waitlist | Local booking apps | Global versions of booking apps; walk-in waitlists |
| Food delivery | Local delivery apps | Hotel front desk; special visitor programmes |
| Payments | Local simple-pay apps | Foreign card, prepaid travel cards |
Why the wall is there
본인인증 (bon-in-injeung) means identity verification, and in Korea it usually means a text message to a mobile number registered to your own name. Banks, shops and platforms use it to prevent fraud. For residents it takes ten seconds. For visitors it is often the end of the road.
"The restaurant app wanted a Korean number, the delivery app wanted a Korean number, and my card failed in the taxi app. Everything was in English except the step that mattered."
- Three apps, one verification wall
- Phone and card both foreign
What it turns on: the verification step, not the language. An app can be fully translated and still be unusable if it texts a code only to a Korean registered number.
Researchers found the same thing
A 2026 study by Yanolja Research analysed English Reddit posts about travel in Korea and Japan from 2023 to 2025. Inconvenience came up in about 11% of the Korea segments and 7% of the Japan ones, and the biggest bottleneck in Korea was digital: phone verification, map addresses and card payments, rather than the places themselves.
Workarounds that actually work
- Install visitor versions before you flyTaxi apps made for foreign visitors, and global versions of restaurant booking apps, let you sign up by email and pay with a foreign card. Seoul says its visitor taxi apps show the fare and tolls separately before you book.
- Register a card that works abroadSome apps reject certain foreign cards. Carry a second card from a different network.
- Ask the front deskHotels and many guesthouses will book a table, order delivery or call a taxi for you.
- Walk inMany popular restaurants run a tablet waitlist at the door that only needs a name and a number to call out.
- Call 1330The Korea Travel Hotline can interpret a phone call to a restaurant or business for you.
What wastes your evening
- Trying the same local app three times
- Borrowing a stranger's phone number
- Only one card, from one network
What saves it
- Visitor apps installed at home
- Two cards on different networks
- Front desk or 1330 for the one call that matters
It is getting better
In August 2026 Seoul and the delivery app Baemin ran a campaign at Han River summer events so foreign visitors could order delivery with fewer phone-verification and foreign-card barriers, with signposted delivery zones. The government's tourism plan also calls for passport-based verification and wider foreign-friendly payment.
The bottom line
Korea is easy and safe to travel in once you are past one digital step that was built for residents. Install visitor apps before you leave, carry two cards, and use the front desk or 1330 for the rest. The places are welcoming; it is the login screen that needs a plan.

Frequently asked questions
Why do Korean apps ask for a Korean phone number?
Many Korean apps verify users with a text message to a Korean mobile number (starting 010) that is registered in the user's own name. The system was built for residents, so a foreign number or an unregistered SIM often fails at the verification step even when the app itself works in English.
Can I order food delivery in Korea as a tourist?
It has become easier. In August 2026 Seoul worked with the delivery app Baemin on a campaign so foreign visitors at Han River events could order with fewer phone-verification and foreign-card barriers, with marked delivery zones. Outside such programmes, ask your hotel to order for you or use apps that accept email sign-up and foreign cards.
How do I call a taxi in Korea without a Korean phone number?
Use a taxi app built for visitors, which lets you sign up with an email address and pay with a foreign card and shows the expected fare and tolls before you book. You can also hail on the street or use a taxi stand, where the meter applies.
Is Korea changing phone verification for foreigners?
The government's tourism plan includes diversifying verification methods for foreign visitors, such as passport-based verification, and expanding foreign-friendly payment. Some services have already added email or passport sign-up, but many still require a Korean number.
