How to Use NAVER Map in Korea: Language and Addresses

Set NAVER Map to English, Japanese or Simplified Chinese, find the correct Korean address, and verify walking routes, station exits and your destination.

The short answer

For a practical Korea navigation setup, install NAVER Map, choose a supported language and save the Korean address of your accommodation. When an English place name gives uncertain results, compare the Korean name, address and branch before starting directions. Test your actual walking or transit route rather than relying on broad claims that another map app always works or never works.

  • NAVER documents Korean, English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese interfaces; Traditional Chinese is not in that list.
  • Use the place name together with its Korean address and branch.
  • Check the transport mode, travel direction and final station exit before moving.

How do you change NAVER Map to English?

  1. Open the app’s language settingsNAVER’s help points to the MY/profile area, settings and Language. Choose a supported language. Menu placement can change, so use the current help page if your version looks different.
  2. Check iPhone settings if neededNAVER also describes an iOS route through device Settings, NAVER Map and Preferred Language. If the language option is missing, its help advises adding a supported language in the device’s Language & Region settings.
  3. Test a familiar destinationSearch your accommodation, then confirm its address against the booking confirmation. Successfully changing menus does not mean every business name, photo or review will appear translated.

An interface language is not a translated city

Treat a translated place name as one clue rather than a unique identifier. Keep the Korean name and address as well. For Traditional Chinese readers, NAVER’s documented interface options include Simplified Chinese and English; do not promise a Traditional Chinese mode that the current help does not list.

Why does a place search return the wrong branch?

Resolve the destination before following the route

What you have What to add What to compare
English business name Korean name or full address District and branch
Hotel booking confirmation The property’s Korean address Street, building and entrance
A social-media recommendation Exact branch and current listing Address and opening information
A station name Line, direction and exit Street-level destination and walking route

A café chain, hotel group or transliterated place name can produce several plausible results. Copy the address provided by the venue or accommodation, compare it with the map listing and check photographs or the official contact details when necessary. If the results still disagree, ask the venue to send its Korean address or map link instead of guessing which pin looks closest.

What should you do with an address you cannot read?

Address check Documented workflow adapted from official guidance; not a traveler report

Korea Tourism Organization lists NAVER Maps for driving, public transport and walking route searches. NAVER separately documents its interface languages, while Papago documents text translation. Used together, these support a simple workflow: retain the original Korean address, translate unfamiliar instructions and check the destination in the map.

The useful distinction: Translation helps you understand a label; the original address helps you identify a place. This is a source-based workflow, not evidence that a particular traveler was sent to the wrong hotel.

Save the hotel’s Korean name, address and contact details in a note you can show to staff. Keep the original text alongside any translation. Machine translation can change spacing, names or building information, so use it to understand the message rather than to replace the address. If you have no data connection, a saved note still helps you ask for directions, but it is not live navigation.

Useful Korean terms to recognize

주소 means address, 출구 means exit and 도보 means walking. Recognizing these labels helps you distinguish the destination address from a station exit or a route setting. Ask for confirmation when the remaining instructions are unclear.

How do you check the walking or public-transit route?

Look at the chosen travel mode first, then the direction of travel and the final walk. A route to a station is not necessarily a route to the door you need. Check the suggested exit and whether you are on the correct side of a large road. If you have luggage or limited mobility, verify the accessible route with station information rather than assuming the shortest route includes lifts.

App capabilities and transport information change. Instead of telling yourself that Google Maps never works in Korea, test the route you need and cross-check uncertain details in a local map or with the operator. Reopen directions before a transfer; an old screenshot cannot reflect a changed departure time, closure or your current location.

What if the route or location still looks wrong?

Pause somewhere safe and ask

Korea is generally safe to travel in, and asking a hotel desk, venue or station employee for an address check is an ordinary request. Stop walking while comparing the route. Show the destination name and original address together rather than handing over only a translated nickname.

For an app problem, note the app version, device language, search text and incorrect result. Report that to the app provider privately. If you share the experience publicly, avoid posting a screenshot that exposes your current accommodation or precise live location. A clear description of the confusing branch or exit helps the next visitor more than a blanket statement that an entire map service is unusable.

Before you go

Keep one verified Korean address for each important destination, test your route and check the last exit or entrance. A supported interface language helps, but it does not replace confirming the correct place.

After your trip, record what actually happened in a traveler review. Describe the date, location and outcome; omit booking numbers, baggage tags and other private details. A public review helps other visitors, while a service complaint must go to the responsible operator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use NAVER Map in English?

NAVER’s current help lists English as a supported app language, alongside Korean, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. Change it through the app settings or the documented iOS language settings, then test a destination you know.

Does NAVER Map support Traditional Chinese?

NAVER’s current language help lists Simplified Chinese, not Traditional Chinese. Traditional Chinese readers can choose a listed language they understand, such as Simplified Chinese or English, while keeping original Korean addresses available.

Why can I not find my hotel by its English name?

An English name can differ from a listing’s spelling or match several branches. Compare the Korean property name and full address from your booking confirmation, and ask the hotel for its Korean address or map link if results disagree.

Do I need to stop using Google Maps in Korea?

Test the specific search and route you need rather than relying on an absolute claim about an app. Cross-check uncertain walking directions, destination branches and station exits with NAVER Map, another suitable source or local staff.
